Greener Homes Loan:
What Alberta Homeowners Should Use Now
The Canada Greener Homes Loan program has ended. Here are the financing alternatives available for Alberta solar installations right now.
Canada Greener Homes Loan: What Happened and What's Available Now
The Canada Greener Homes Loan program closed to new applications in mid-2024. If you were counting on this funding for a solar installation, here's what you need to know and what alternatives remain available.
What Was the Canada Greener Homes Loan?
The Canada Greener Homes Loan was a federal program administered by Natural Resources Canada that offered interest-free loans between $5,000 and $40,000 to homeowners who completed eligible home energy retrofits. Solar photovoltaic installations were among the qualifying upgrades.
The program required a pre-retrofit EnerGuide energy assessment, completion of at least one eligible retrofit, and a post-retrofit assessment. Applicants were reimbursed for assessment costs as part of the program.
The Greener Homes Grant, a companion program offering grants of up to $5,000 for the same retrofits, closed even earlier. Both programs were among the most widely promoted federal energy incentives in recent years, which is why many Albertans are still searching for information about them.
The Greener Homes Loan offered up to $40,000 interest-free for qualifying retrofits including solar panels.

Program fully wound down. No new applications or reactivation announced as of 2026.
What Financing Is Available Now for Alberta Solar?
The good news is that Alberta homeowners have not been left without options. Two programs fill much of the gap left by the Greener Homes Loan.
CEIP Municipal Financing
The Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) is a property-assessed clean energy financing program. Qualifying municipalities offer loans at rates as low as 3.75%, repaid through your property tax bill. No large upfront payment required. Available in Edmonton, Airdrie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, St. Albert, and Strathcona County. Calgary and Spruce Grove are temporarily paused.
Learn About CEIPBridge Loan Financing
For homeowners outside CEIP municipalities, or those who want to move quickly, short-term bridge financing is available. Rates typically range from 6.99% to 12.99% depending on credit profile. A bridge loan covers the full installation cost and can be repaid early once CEIP or other financing becomes available.

Can I still receive funding if I applied before the cutoff?
If you received approval before the program closed, your loan should still be in process. Contact Natural Resources Canada directly or your EnerGuide advisor to confirm your file status.
Is the federal government planning a replacement program?
As of mid-2026, no direct replacement for the Greener Homes Loan has been announced by the federal government. The Canada Greener Homes Initiative page on NRCan's website references the closure. We will update this page if a new program launches.
Are there any provincial grants available in Alberta?
Alberta does not currently offer a provincial grant program for residential solar. The province's incentive framework focuses on the regulatory side (net billing, CEIP) rather than direct grants. The federal ITC (Investment Tax Credit) remains available for commercial installations.
Going Solar Still Makes Strong Financial Sense
Even without the Greener Homes Loan, CEIP financing and Alberta's net billing program make solar one of the strongest home investments in the province. Get a transparent proposal to see the real numbers for your home.
