Calgary CEIP: Reopening Sept 22, 2026

Solar in Calgary: The Solar Club™ Advantage

Calgary averages 2,396 hours of sunshine annually , the highest of any major Canadian city. A south-facing rooftop here produces approximately 1,280 to 1,350 kWh per installed kilowatt per year. ENMAX customers in the city benefit from the Solar Club™ rate plan, which pays $0.30/kWh for summer exports , nearly 3x the wholesale rate available in most other provinces.

Calgary's CEIP program has been paused and is expected to reopen September 22, 2026 with new funding. We're actively tracking this and can pre-qualify your home so you're ready to apply the moment the program opens. In the meantime, bridge financing options remain available through our lending partners.

Solar Installation in Calgary

Calgary residential solar installations require a development permit through the City of Calgary's Planning Services. The city has streamlined its solar permit process in recent years, and most straightforward residential applications are approved within 10 to 15 business days. After installation, an Alberta Safety Codes Officer (electrical) inspection is required before ENMAX can activate the bidirectional meter.

Calgary's Chinook winds and occasional hail are factors worth discussing during your system design consultation. Modern solar panels are rated to withstand hail up to a certain size (typically 25mm at 23m/s per IEC 61215), and installer warranties typically cover hail damage. Chinook winds are not a meaningful factor for properly mounted rooftop systems.

About Calgary

Calgary is Alberta's largest city by population, situated at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers at the edge of the Canadian Prairies and the foothills of the Rockies. Founded in 1875 as a North-West Mounted Police fort, it grew rapidly during the oil boom of the 20th century and today is home to over 1.3 million people. Its southern Alberta location and semi-arid climate give it the highest sunshine hours of any major Canadian city , a key reason why solar economics are particularly strong here.

Calgary's electricity market is dominated by ENMAX, which serves most city residents for both distribution and supply. For permitting, the City of Calgary solar permit guide outlines current requirements. ENMAX's solar and micro-generation page details interconnection requirements and the Solar Club™ enrollment process.
