Solar in Slave Lake: North-Central Alberta Solar

Slave Lake sits at 55 degrees north latitude, roughly equidistant between Edmonton and High Prairie. Solar irradiance here produces approximately 1,100 to 1,200 kWh per kilowatt annually on a properly oriented roof. ATCO Electric is the distribution utility for the town and surrounding area, and Alberta's retail-rate net billing applies under the provincial Micro-Generation Regulation.

Electricity costs in rural and small-town northern Alberta can be relatively high, which means the dollar value of solar savings can be competitive even with the lower production at this latitude. There is no CEIP program currently available in the area.

Installation and Permitting

Solar installations in the Town of Slave Lake require a building permit from the town's municipal office. ATCO Electric handles interconnection applications. Given the area's winter snowfall, panel angle optimization and appropriate snow-load rated mounting hardware are standard practice for our installations here.

Snow can temporarily reduce production, but panels on a pitched roof typically shed snow within 1 to 3 days after a snowfall. We optimize panel tilt angle for Slave Lake installations to maximize natural snow shedding.

About Slave Lake

Slave Lake is a town of approximately 7,000 people on the southern shore of Lesser Slave Lake, one of Alberta's largest lakes. Located about 240 km northwest of Edmonton, the community serves the surrounding agricultural, forestry, and oil and gas industries. Like Fort McMurray, the town experienced a major wildfire in 2011 that destroyed much of the community, and the subsequent rebuild resulted in a significant amount of newer construction with modern building standards.

The northern setting brings long summer days (over 17 hours of daylight at the summer solstice), which partially offsets the lower sun angle in terms of annual solar energy production. For town permits, contact the Town of Slave Lake. ATCO Electric's micro-generation page covers interconnection requirements.
